my 1998 chevrolet cavalier will start n run when jumped....once you take the cables off it dies! what might b the problem?

Bad battery or charging system issue. Inspect all wires cables and grounds .. Check the alternator output at the battery terminals 13.4-14.8 volts DC engine running.
