Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just purchased a 2003 passat. It
shifts smoothly through every gear
except when put in reverse it makes
a loud "clank". Is there any reason
for this one particular gear to have
problems? If the tranny was going
bad would i notice it in the other
gears? Thsnks

I'd take a look at the motor mounts by using a floorjack and woodblock to see if there is any separation of cohesion which should be taking place...most likely is affecting the linkage to the reverse engagement...might be "overdoin' it" because the geometry has been upset by the transmission mounts askew~

I was thinking possibly the mounts. Its an automatic. Is there a bushing or just linkage to the reverse?

Its the regular glx not the 4 motion. Loose mounts do make sense.

Mine started with that. Then after you put it in reverse and go to drive, I had to turn car off and back on. Transmission going out
