If you are buying from a private party or a dealer, I would make a deal with him in this manor. IF ALL HE SAYS IS TRUE, you pay for the inspection {usually less than $100.00 dollars} But if he is trying to deceive you and not honest, then he pays for the inspection. Since it's a VW, I would have them do the inspection. A hundred dollars is cheaper than a trans., but make sure this is the car you want first. Don't waste their timejust shoping. But believe me, if they are trying to pull something over on you, they will decline the offer.

if you had trouble with the earlier cars's tranny maybe you will with the new cars. first you need to check what you are doing wrong (like the driving, maybe hauling, etc) or what you are not doing (maintenance, filter change, etc) AUTOMATIC transmission are subject to failure because they have parts that get wear inside so mileage and previous treatment is very important.
