why did my 95 VW passat die on the highway?

I was driving on the highway for a good 5 miles and when i went to speed up there was nothing. the gas pedal completely gave out. I was just slowing down rapidly so i pulled off to the side of the road and flipped on my hazards. I waited about a minute and it started right back up and I flipped around and made it home safely. help me fix my car!
