loud noise from starter after releasing ingnition key - what is it ?

2005 beetle , 2.0L . If the key is released very quickly it will not make the noise .

Sounds like it is not disengaging all the way from the fly wheel after the first crank. I would replace the starter before you lose teeth on your fly wheel.
