Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my question is at crusing speeds is it normal for it to be at or around 3300rpms@70mph...this seems kinda high to me but some people say its normal cause of the gear ratio..some say no that i should have it checked would love to get a real answer. i have also heard that it may not have an overdrive? this would be my first vw but so far i love it but its really making me nervous to drive past 70 any real info would be great

This seems about normal, especially without overdrive. I would not worry about it.

a vw aircooled engine should never be lugged at a low rpm in the wrong gear, nor should it be over revved ! I would say that 70mph is ok, but 75-80 is pushing your luck. If you must do 70mph all the time, be sure to change your endine oil at 2000 mile intervals and adjust the valves more frequently. your engine will last much longer just by doing these two maintenance points.

3300 rpms steady speed will not hurt your aircooled engine if:.....you change your motor oil every 2000 miles instead of every 3000 miles......and: you adjust your valves at three month intervals...remember this-never lug the engine at low rpms in the wrong gear, and never over rev the engine either....your engine will live a long time if you don't beat the crap out of it....70mph should be fine...75-80 mph is pushing your luck....these engines were never designed for sustained high rpms like modern overhead cam engines are.

How to get more speed and power out of my 2003 bug

2 people found this helpful.

I have a 2002 VW Beetle pre-owned I have already had to have the whole gear shift replaced. NOW a month later I'm struggling with it now not wanting to start it takes me about 4 tries then starts but sounds like it wants to stall. I'm also experiencing I'm not getting no power the rpm revs to high and I'm having to switch gears to quickly still hardly no power. I just did an oil change but now the oil light seems to pop on through driving and beeps constantly also my traction light comes on and I feel it kick in I've done all I could to turn it off and no luck. I'm lost and confused I've already poured so much into this car and would like to know is it worth it to keep going. Before I put it in the shop for the gear work it ran great now its useless basically, I need some type of help or answer just giving me a rough idea what the problems are or could be...u can reach me at krnlindsay@gmail.com. Thank You
