Replacing the front headlamp on my 2000VW Beetle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I called Pep Boys and was told that only an authorized dealer can change the headlamp for me.  I then called a VW mechanic and was quoted $90.  I called another VW mechanic and was quoted $40 + the cost of the lamp.  Anyone know anything different?

The bulb itself is replaceable, if that's what you mean. Should be about $10. Its a llittle tricky to do...and you have to keep from touching it with your skin (wear clean, latex gloves). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALcVKiHmn9Q Start at 1m35s for the procedure.

Went to a VW mechanic this morning and had it replaced for $71.00. Probably too much but as least it's done.
