the antitheft radio stops working when its power source is interrupted. There are tools to keep this from happening when the battery is removed. Check to see if you have the radio security code card in the owners manual. It's a four digit number and the manual tells how to enter it properly. If you don't have it, you need to provide a VW dealer with the cars 17 digit VIN and the radio's unique ten digit chassis number.

You need to find out what the security code is for your radio. I had the same problem after getting my car back from the shop. The manual might have it in it, if you are as unlucky as me.. you'll have to take the radio out and get the serial number off the radio. Then a dealer should be able to give you the code. I got lucky enough that someone wrote the code on top of my radio so I just needed to take the radio out to get the code.
