automatic transmission slipping

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm trying to buy a used car from a private party and I have been told that the
tran keeps slipping and they dont want to put the time into it to fix it or even
figure out if there is a recall on the tran. They would rather just sell out of their
problem. Body nice, interior nice, 2.0 litre 4 inline. GL sedan. I doubt there is a
turbo charge on this. I haven't researched the VIN to find out

German automatics are just plain expensive, at least 3 grand worth on this one. If your still intent on this then run the vin through a dealership and see what turns up, if there are no recalls or TSB’s then spend a little cash and have a transmission shop do the stand alone testing then you will know if it is electronic or the transmission is toast. Then if you still want it make a low ball offer and see what they say.

Usually they would have to sell it for next to nothing to make it worth your while . Will it need struts ? Wheel bearings ? Rust treatment ?

Transmission fixes are very rarely easy or cheap! The seller knows this and that's why they're selling! Unless you get the vehicle for FREE you don't want it!! Keep shopping!! Jim
