Value when the motor needs replacement?

We are looking at this Volkswagon that is in average condition but needs a new engine.  The report is that the rings are bad. What would be a fair price?

I wouldn't pay a lot. it's gonna cost you a pretty penny to get that tdi fixed right. you might want to look into another car. for the price you would pay to replace that engine you could buy a new tdi..
