I have a 01 jetta 2.8 motor.my car wont start.it dtarted this morning fine but when i tryed to get back in the car n start it,it wont start.i have power inside the car.what is the problem

My cousin told me he think the starter is bad.he told me if I turn the key over n I hear a clicking nose that mean the starter trying to engaged.he told me to hit it with a hammer n see if it will start.I'm goin to try that n see what happen
I found out why my car didn't start.the wire that connect to the starter was split in half.I connected them back together n it started right up.
