Volkswagen jetta battery problem

Hello, i am using volkswagen jetta 2001, recently
my car was stopped after getting battery indicator
turns red on the display, so i have changed
immediately after my mechanic told to do so with a
cost of 179$, but still its not starting now and
mechanic was telling that to change alternate
battery also, do we need to change for sure? Was
that the problem actually ? How much does it cost?

Tom is correct When the battery light usually comes on it indicates a recharge issue. and fyi the dealership will exchange your battery for 125$ so you got hosed there. I would find a good VW/audi specialist shop in your area and have them put a new alternator in your car. Replacement of a alternator in a vw can be a very complex thing since you have to put the car in service mode to do it properly. I am willing to bet the core has probly expanded or the brushes have worn out of your old alternator as thats what happened to my old 98 audi before i had to replace it. Finding a cheap alternator is going to be a trick tho you can take a chance with a scrap yard part for like 75-125$ or go refurbished which will cost roughly 300$ or brand new from vw for about 600$ Im not sure if the vw has a voltage meter on the dash but it should read betwe4n 13.4-14.5 volts at all times
