Will a transmisssion out of a 1996-1997
chevy suburban work in a 1999 chevy
suburban 4wheel drive if i do away with the
4 tranfer case n just use it as rear wheel
drive

For all part interchangeability, go to www.car-part.com and select your vehicle and options. It will display all the vehicles with interchangeable parts. If you see a 1999 you can assume the answer is yes.
