one of two problems, first and easiest is the linkage links are worn out, go to your local Vdub dealer and ask for new shifter links (explain your problem) they are easy to install (two of them) should fix your problem if not...you may have transmission problems internally from what you described it may have run dry of oil and seized up but that is worse case and not likely. Those MK3 are bad for the shifter links wearing out usually starts with reverse and 5th gear hard to get in and stay in. Good luck!
