2004 Golf TDI Diesel Engine Issues

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Golf TDI, 5 Speed with 150,000 highway miles on it.  I just spent $3,000 to have the timing belt and turbo charger replaced. The engine has now begun making a knocking noise and the VW dealer will tell me tomorrow if it needs top end or bottom end work.  I've been told to expect another $3,000 +/- bill.

Should I look for another used or rebuilt engine or begin shopping for another vehicle and sell this one AS IS to a junkyard or rebuilder?  Body and interior are in great shape.

Thanks ahead of time for your input.

Cheers,

Mike Dyer

i would firsr have them re check the turbo, could be nothing but a bent blade in it ,if not you went this far ,if you like it and is something wrong we cant tell you what to do as far as traiding or selling ,is really up to you.

Yes, I would wait to see what the diagnosis is before you decide. Hard to say, but it sounds like you will be throwing good money after bad with $6,000 in the vehicle til you are all done. I would consider shopping for a new vehicle if you do a lot of commuting or if it's your only car...
