Upgrading headlight bulbs to LED

Asked by IMGPMKC Dec 11, 2017 at 04:10 PM about the 2001 Volkswagen Golf GLS TDI

Question type: Car Customization

My VW Golf comes with halogen bulbs and I want to replace them with LEDs.
What is required? Some have told me I will need an adaptor, but I haven't
confirmed that. I am planning on only replacing the low beam bulbs and
keeping the halogen high beam bulbs.

By pass the halogen connection and wire it straight to 12 volt light switch that will allow use of low and high beams. Could use the wires that power the halogen balast that increases wattage to halogen bulb. Use in put not out put. Check that voltage does not exceed 12v for wires used to power led bulb.

Either do it right or leave them alone. LED conversion is not much different from HID as such you need a projector housing for the bulb as well as running a dedicated relay as VW OEM wiring is going to be the weak link sooner or later usually after it fries something. It takes time and having a bit of know-how with Electrical, soldering etc and when done correctly you'll never need any more light then your low beams whether LED or HID.
