Transmission and engine oil

Asked by GuruNSRDY Oct 31, 2019 at 02:32 AM about the 2001 Volkswagen Golf GL TDI

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi, i made a mistake by emptying transmission oil
instead of engine oil. After adding engine oil i took
it for a 5 minute drive, and realised there was no
power in gear shifting. Now i have changed the
engine oil and added engine oil 10w40 and added
transmission oil 80w90 but the car still has loss of
power and delays on shifting gear, can anyone tell
me what damages i have cause to my golf tdi
2001.

Automatic transmission? If you put gear oil in it the transmission is toast.

Thank you for the reply! Its manual transmission. I drove for 5 minutes without transmission oil realising loss in power and gear shift. After filling transmission oil and driving again there is still delay in gear shifting and power loss!

Overfilling the engine is dangerous and no oil in the transmission would have damaged it.
