Engine Cooling System Malfunction

Hi, Observed that while I am driving my VW Golf 4
in a highway during the cold weather like less than
5 degrees C the engine temperature lowers up to
35_40 degree C but when for example I am in
traffic jam then the temperature goes up to 120
and more if I do not stop the engine or switch on
the AC, basically by switching on AC the 2 fans in
front of the engine start turning which helps to cool
the engine down to 90 degree C. Those 2 fans
never activate unless the AC is switched on. What
could be the cause of this malfunction? Is it any of
the faiped sensors which prevents fans
activations?

Maybe you have a faulty fan control module (relay) and it is not activating the fan when required automatically.

Thanks for your prompt answer, talking about the relay , how is it possible to identify if the relay is faulty? And also could it affect the engine being cooled down while driving a car on the highway?

If you know for sure that the relay is faulty, then just replace the part. Technicians test these type of parts out of the vehicle. As long as the engine is cool (check temperature gauge) there should be no problem. However, this can be tricky and I encourage you to have it checked.

check your temp sensor and fluid levels very comman issue is a 4 point flange cracks and causes the sensor to give a miss read. its located under the intake on the 1.8's
