Crank but no start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Bought a cheap Golf, no start. Engine didn't crank
at first, bypassed the alarm module, tested ignition,
checked starter, eventually got it to crank again.
Has spark coming from coil. Will not fire off with
starting fluid. I don't have any pressure gauges at
home to test for fuel pressure or compression. Last
owner said that they thought hey blew the head.
Timing belt is in tact, I have not checked to see if
it's in time. Oil is over full, no coolant in system so
it's possible that the head gasket failed. What's
next?

Well I pulled the valve cover off, found that the oil had been heated to the point where it turned to plastic. Removed the head, found the exhaust valve on the number 3 cylinder was stuck open, the number 3 piston was seized, and found a rip in the head gasket. Time for a new engine.
