what cause a 97 volkswagen golf to be in first when you put it in reverse??

MY car is in first gear when I put it in reverse. in stead of moving backwards it goes forward. and then when you put it first its in 3rd?

I had an 85 Golf with this problem and T_S_T is correct. Also, the little nylon joining pieces that connect the linkage shafts get warn out and sometimes break. This can contribute to your problem.

Have your mechanic check the linkage, that's probably the issue. Good luck!
