How to manually unlock my 1997 VW Golf tailgate from the inside?

Asked by Alfirah Dec 21, 2014 at 12:48 PM about the 1997 Volkswagen Golf 2 Dr GL Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello. I have a 1997 VW Golf. Vacuum pump lock type.
I have no key for the trunk lock, it was replaced with an old lock just so
I can open/close the trunk. It was wired back in properly, though.
I don't care if I can't lock it, not a big deal.
The thing is it decides to lock once in a while.
The first time it did, I could not open it for a few weeks, and then like magic, one day I
could open it.
Well, I should have cut some wires right then....
Now it locked again a few days ago and I cannot open it.
How do I manually unlock and open the tailgate from the inside?
Turning the key in my driver door lock doesn't not unlock the trunk.
Apparently the circuit connecting the driver's door lock and the trunk lock works only
when it wants to.
Please help, I just want to open the trunk and make sure it never locks again.
Thank you.
Karine

I have a 1997 Golf as well, and there is a little button located in the drink holder. Lift the lid to the drink holder and the button should be there. Good luck.
