02 cabrio stalling

Asked by LOSTMUTT Nov 25, 2015 at 11:26 AM about the 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio 2 Dr GLX Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my wife owns a 2002 cabrio, it has about 150k on it. a month back felt a
slight spudder in the motor. didn't think to much of it. then the car started to
lose coolant like crazy. ended up replacing the coolant hose outet flange
housing. but the fan started staying on after car was off and killing the
battery. i replaced the coolant temp sensor, then the fan switch sensor. the
car made it 1 block then died, restarted, went one block and died again but
wouldn't start again. we had it towed. while looking over the motor i noticed
the PCV valve was gunked up bad. so just replaced that last night with new
spark plugs while i had the valve cover off. put her back together and she
fired right up. idle surged a bit and evened out after warming up. took it out
for test drive and she died as soon as i got on the gas pedal. started back
up and idles but dies when given some pedal. i don't want to get to deep
into parts without knowing where to go from here. im a harley machanic,
not a vw mechanic. ohh and after the last die and idle the oil lamp started
flashing.

A few things to look at, First VW's are a pain to work on. Clean the throttle body with a good throttle body cleaner also check the throttle body sensor. I would also check the crank sensor this could cause the problem and check to see if the catalytic converter may be clogged and the check the sensors.

Did you ever get this car figured out? I have an 02 that is a nightmare, same set of problems. The last time it would go for a block and stall I had to have the computer reprogrammed. Apparently after the battery goes dead it loses volatile programming. Whatever. 4 weeks later I have a check engine light on and running rough. 5 weeks later it is running fine with the check engine light on. 6 weeks later the check engine light is off but the car starts stalling and losing power completely ever 1/2 of a mile.

David , I had the same problem. I replaced the fuel.pump. then the fuel filter . Ran for about 4 mins on it's own, then climbed and cluttered and died. I bought a new fuel relay. .not on it yet.. have you figured yours out yet?

Had the same exact issues with my 2000 cabrio, it was the MAF sensor, had oil on it and overheated. Put an OEM Bosch unit in it, no problems since.

I took my 98 cabrio to small time outfit called German Autowerks who told me it was only in need of a $500 tune up, consisting of plugs, wires and a cap and rotor- and it still stalls after running it for 10 minutes. I hope it isn't a clogged catylitic converter. Those things are ecpensive. Sensors I can afford. Lazy mechanics I cannot. Derrick
