98 VW Cabrio - Radio Replacement - Speakers quit after 5 seconds

I replaced the radio with an AIWA. Radio is powered. It receives a tremendous amount of stations, the problem is the speakers stopped working. I checked everything and a the connections are solid, the wires intact. There's not even background noise. It's almost as if theres some hidden switch not allowing the speakers to connect. Any ideas?

Make sure you have a proper ground...big requirement there...especially if the amp inside the radio is hi-power. Second, get an old speaker and some wire and make a tester. Check the output of the radio at the rear splices. If you have to remove the radio to test it...be sure to run a temporary ground wire from radio chassis to the car's body somewhere... um...might wanna get more wire. PS. Don't power up the radio until you have the tester connected...and make sure the volume is turned way down at first. Good luck.
