Do I have a cam belt or chain

Just purchased, at what point do I need to replace the cam belt or chain. I have 100k on
the clock

don't worry about the timing 'chain ' no need to replace !

BMW's don't have belts, only timing chains. No maintenance needed there!

That is not exactly true. Some older BMWs do have timing belts and if they are not replaced at every 5 years or 50K miles, then disaster will strike causing a complete top end rebuild. Most newer (20 years or so) BMWs have timing chains but proper maintenance is to replace the timing chain tensioner (it's oil fed) every 100K.
