Just bought a old 1988 Celica GT convertible. what maintenance should i do?

Asked by John May 07, 2019 at 03:08 PM about the 1988 Toyota Celica GT-S Convertible FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car had been sitting outdoors for the last 5 years, It has 142K miles on
it. I checked the fluids, gave it gas and a battery and she runs, she made it
home. I gave it a new air filter already. It has a hard time starting. It seems
like i can turn the key and run the starter for multiple seconds and it won't
start. but it starts on the second or third try. It also has a bit of vibration in the
steering wheel, i think may be from old tires. tonight i plan to do a Oil
change, Oil filter, Wire-Set. and coolant flush.   I have no idea what the
history of the car is. anything else i should replace or check?

The fuel system is probably gummed up pretty badly. Since it runs I would replace the fuel filter and use Seafoam or Techron in several gas tanks of fuel until it starts running better. Install new spark plugs and a cap and rotor too.

i ordered Part Number: JP918 from autozone which appears to be a cap. but i cannot find a rotor.
