engine runs great while driving, but when I stop, or just put it in gear, it stalls.

There is an idle adjustment screw on carburetor and/or throttle cable. Step up the idle to 1000 -1100 rpm and maybe that's all it is. If you don't have a tach, step it up until it runs smooth, just not TOO much or it's hard on your transmission clunking in to gear from too-fat engine speed
