1986 Toyota Camry

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

This car was driven by “an 86 year old man” and
was the only owner.  It has 70k miles.  Needs some
mechanical things done, minor according to the
grandson.  They are asking $2950.  I offered $1500.

I think your opening offer is pretty low compared to the asking price, I personally wouldn't even bothering contacting you if you did that to me it's an insult.

Thanks for your response. He actually came back with 1800. I was surprised. He wasn’t insulted as you would have been. Live and learn. Thanks again.

if it doesn't run and you can't take it for a test drive then assume the worst , ie. blown motor /bad tranny , of course an older car with only 70k is a find even if you have to put $$ into it as long as the bottom isn't rotted out . The older ones are easier to trouble shoot and work on , don't take any ones word on it and the receipt shouldn't say "as is "

Your offer was right on spot- in my opinion the "little old man" thing isn't worth the extra $300

Your offer was a fair price. I wouldn't pay more than $2000, even if the car was mechanically flawless. Keep in mind that at this age, despite the low mileage, the wiring and seals are bound to be old and brittle. Also, if the car has sat unused for long periods of time, that can create a whole other set of issues.
