I have 1999 e320 Mercedes I push on the gas bedal the idel go to #4 it's not shifting only go 40 mile

I understand you are having performance issues. High idle? is your air-conditioning on? "it's not shifting", have you checked the transmission oil level? Only goes 40mph, well a sick transmission wll do that. Check you fluid level, sir!
derkaiser ,you say engine is turning 4000 rpm and stuck in ist gear top out at 40 mph , sounds correct for max first gear windup, yes supposed to shift long ago ,check fluid,,,maby filter in pan almost plugged up completey,starving flow to valve body, so many never change fluid --- add clean up oil,run for while, drain ,replace or clean filter,add fresh fluid ,maby some lucas juice too

how about the torque converter. there's probably a gallon of used oil in that one too-
