2003 camry automatically downshifts when braking down a steep hill

Asked by RJones123 Apr 05, 2013 at 06:46 PM about the 2003 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: General

I have owned a 2003 Camry LE for 8 yrs. I just noticed when descending a fairly steep hill that the transmission downshifts from OD to 3rd gear as I brake to check my speed. I cannot find any reference to that feature in the owners manual and wondered what the parameters were that causes that function to engage. It doesn't happen all the time. It is an interesting feature and I would like to understand it so I can explain it to other friends who own Toyotas. Thank you in advance for your response.

It probably has something to do with your speed and how long your foot is off the gas. --- On my Pontiac, the fuel injectors shut off after a few seconds.

I know exactly what your referring to. It does the same thing with downshifting at the very bottom of a hill before i have even given it more gas.
