What might cause a vibration that continued after i shut the car off for about 10 seconds

I was sitting in a drive through tonight and went to pull away my cavalier started to shake
and continued to shake until i turned the car off and it still did it for about 10 seconds and
then it finally stopped. i started the car back up and it ran fine after. what would the cause
of this possible be.. also just had the car inspected on monday.

Did the engine continue to run after you turned it off, and run roughly? This is called "dieseling," see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dieseling you might look into a gas-additive to clean carbon deposits in the cylinder to prevent dieseling. The "shaking" was likely caused by just one or more of the cylinders dieseling and not all of them, so it would feel like the engine was running with a misfire. There are other factors to consider in why an engine would 'diesel' so look into that and take whatever steps to correct it.

no it shut right down that im aware of. It just vibrated briefly while it was off didnt get worse or anything when i hit the gas was consistant

Your cooling fan is out of balance causing vibration. Still runs briefly after you shut off vehicle. I had the same problem on my sunfire. $40 fan assembly on ebay and an hours worth of work.
