My Blazer reads over-full on transmission fluid before i start then after driving a couple blocks it reads completely dry.

Asked by Andy Oct 08, 2014 at 01:08 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer LS 4-Door RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I check the transmission dipstick before I start-up, it reads over-full.  Then I take it for a short drive around the block.  When I return, there is absolutely no fluid on the dipstick and one time I noticed a small amount of smoke.  what's the issue here?

The proper way to check your transmission fluid level is to warm up the engine and transmission by driving around for ten or fifteen minutes. Then WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING and the.vehicles IN PARK pull out the dipstick, wipe it, and get the reading.

And don't forget to be on a level surface as well while performing the fore-mentioned procedure.

Yes, depending on the design of the transmission, it may read high on the stick? You want to be concerned with the operating level which requires the vehicle to be up to temp and running while checking it.
