Engine swap compatibility

Asked by Bethanie Jan 13, 2018 at 11:20 PM about the 2005 Dodge RAM 2500 SLT Quad Cab LB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 05 dodge ram 2500 5.9 cummings that I
believe has bad rings and is leaking oil I bought an
07 5.9 cummings engine and had it rebuilt I'm now
wondering if these engines will match up and swap
out with out a bunch of trouble

The newer engine while of the same series as the 05 has more power. You may run into engine control issues. I would talk to a diesel specialist to see if your 05 ECU will work with the newer engine. If you have a 2007.5 engine there were changes to the EGR and engine displacement. https://cumminsengines.com/pickup-truck-cummins-ram-history
