Put too big of tire and wheel on will actually make the fuel mileage go down. Also when changing tire sizes you have to consider odometer and speedometer error when figuring fuel mileage.

why does a bigger road tire lower my MPG. the 5.9 has enough torque at lower RPM. my thought is that instead of messing with gear ratio i can accomplish the same with larger tire circumference.. the truck has 245/75 r16 mounted now with lots of fender clearance. the speedometer difference can be remedied very easily.

Bigger tires have increased rolling resistance, they are less aerodynamic and they weigh considerably more. They will take slightly more power to get rolling and keep rolling.
