truck shuts off while I'm driving.

Asked by NM57 Mar 04, 2016 at 07:51 PM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2003 ram 1500 shuts off while I'm driving. I get
no check engine lights either. It doesn't bog or
anything just shuts off. It starts right back u. I read
a few articles to change the TPS which I already
did. Another suggestion is the cam and crank
shafts position sensors. Does anyone have any
idea what it could be. Fuel pump is also brand new.

Check air filter and replace if necessary, change fuel filter if have not done so in a while, add fuel injector cleaner to gas tank.

Rodrigueztowing, I changed the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors a 4th time and got a multiple cylinder misfire code, so I replaced all the spark plugs and coils and it's been fine ever since.

Did you ever find the problem with your Dodge truck? I have a 01 5.9 runs great, but it will cut off going down the road, pull to the side, won't start, spins fine, let it sit anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours, then it will crank. Computer has been replaced, crank sensor has been too. When it does this, the gauges don't register, except gas gauge and radio won't come on. Any ideas. HELP if you can. Thanks

Does dodge still have an ECM module that shuts off when the voltage drops below 12 volts as a safety feature. I had a Dakota that would just die and after a few minutes would start. I had 11.7 volts at terminal on unit. They found a corroded connection 700 dollars latter. This left no codes when it happened.

A common problem is an aftermarket ignition coil. These parts cause a lot of electrical noise and can feed back to the computer causing it to shutdown as a safety measure. Finding the faulty Ignition coil is a challenge as it does work. it just causes interference. Just have a look at your coils and see if there are any Aftermarket ones. Replace with OEM and should be good to go. Here is a 2 part youtube video diagnosing and finding the problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDcwbNZuLRw

Map or Maf Sensor. I never had a cel until one day it just died turned back on drove and the cel came on. It was the sensor. I was also causing bad shifting, specially when coming to a stop.

I eventually replaced all the ignition coils, spark plugs, cam and crankshaft sensors (parts directly from dodge) the truck ran fine after that then I sold it a few months later. So if the problem still happens is unknown. But it did work fine after the work.
