My 2002 Dodge Ram Truck starts intermittently, seems to be fuel related

Asked by discovery222 Jan 22, 2017 at 07:00 PM about the 2002 Dodge RAM 1500 ST 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck has been well maintained and only has 71,000 miles on it. When I turn the key the truck will usually fire right up. However, just lately and only on occasion it will turn over fine but will not fire, unless I hold the gas down 1 time and then it fires as I release the gas pedal. For a short time, a check engine light came on but then when out. I did have it checked at Advanced Auto and got the OBD codes P0304 (Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected), P0868 (Transmission Fluid Pressure Low) and P0867 (Transmission Fluid Pressure). I am not sure if any or all of these have anything to do with the starting problem. The check engine light was only on for 2 days then went off, which surprised me because the guy at Advanced Auto that did the OBD code test told me it was a hard code and would stay on until the problem was fixed. The check engine light is still off but the starting problem continues and is becoming more frequent; meaning, I have to hold the gas all the way down to get it to fire as I release the gas pedal. It is now sometimes taking longer to actually fire and I have had it just crank until the battery gets too low to turn it over. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

I would suggest checking the fuel pressure. It may be the fuel pump or the fuel regulator.

When this happens try spraying some starting fluid into the throttle body, see if it fires right up. If it does, then there is a fuel issue.
