Transmission won't engage

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2001 Ram 1500,  318 motor. Automatic
It has stopped accelerating from Drive gear. However,
when I drop the column shifter to 1st, I can accelerate all
the way up to Drive. Once in Drive the vehicle will not
exceed 55 mph. I can slow to a stop without down shifting
but once I do the process starts over again.
Anyone have insight to what exactly would cause this? It's
obviously a transmission issue.

This is a truck physically in amazing condition, 220k miles,
and this is the only immediate concern. I am looking to
purchase this vehicle, just wanted to know what I was
getting myself into.

You would be correct. However I consider myself knowledgable in all other aspects of a vehicle but this department. Would just swapping a transmission fix this issue. Or does it extend to the transfer case or anything else?? I've read that it could just be a clogged filter. I doubt it's that minute but I'm looking for details... Thank you for post.

I had the exact same issue in my 2008 ram 1500 with the 545rfe, I replaced the shift solenoid and that solved the problem. Have the codes read and they'll tell you which solenoid it is.
