My dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.9L Transmission won't move anywhere. Why

Asked by Bill Jul 06, 2016 at 12:36 PM about the 2001 Dodge RAM 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My transmission just quit working and won't move in any gear. I took the pan off and there was a piece of metal that looked like part of a piston ring and also fine shaving. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2006 Ram 1500 that this has happened to twice. The first time, it's a linkage issue with the shifter cable. First time, had a guy just slip the pin back into place. The second time, found out from a transmission guy that there is a maintenance kit for it. You usually get about 150,000 miles before you need it. I was at 200,000 when I called this guy and he knew what it was just from the mileage. 25,000 miles later and everything is still good.
