My truck does not properly shift when in drive... but if I shift down to 1 then back to drive it will shift fine. What is causing this?

tough to do in the driveway. can climb under and see it you can access the shift rod and check play. best bet is to take to a tranny shop to confirm it is the issue. they will have the tools and knowledge to adjust or replace any worn bushings that may be causing. could need adjusting/bushings replaced on trans side or inside the steering column.
