headlights on 1998 Dodge Ram 1500

the low beam headlights go out after switching back from using the high beams; sometimes while driving the low beams will go out and I have to switch to the high beams just to have headlights.  I recently put in what the paauto parts guy said was the top of the line headlight bulbs.  Can anyone help answer this problem?
