Cooling fan

I have a 2001 Chevy impala and my temperature
gauge go up almost overheating when im not
moving but i notice only 1 fan was running

the primary fan usually takes care of things when you are not using a/c. does the other fan come on if you turn on the a/c? I would check the relays, each fan has them. if they are good, unplug the fan and put 12v power to it and see if it runs, it might be the fan itself. also, make sure your cooling system is full of fluid.
