Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2000 model S-10 V 6.
Is it possible to replace the Pittman arm using a puller without removing the gear box from the truck. If so are there any specifics that need to be known before it's removal.

Repair manual says nothing about pulling gear box. If you're doing this from jack stands might bet a little tight tho... the instructions say the following: (1) Remove the relay rod ball stud at the pitman arm. (2) Remove the relay rod ball stud from the pitman arm using J 24319-B . (use tool "J 24319-B Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller"). Caution! Do not hammer on the pitman arm, pitman arm shaft or puller. Damage to the pitman arm or steering gear may result. (3) Remove the pitman arm nut and washer from the steering gear. (4) Remove the pitman arm from steering gear using J 6632-01 or J 29107-A . (use tool "J 29107-A Pitman Arm Puller" or "J 6632-01 Pitman Arm Remover".) (5) Inspect the ball stud threads for damage. (6) Inspect the ball stud seals for excessive wear. (7) Clean the threads on the ball stud and the ball stud nut. Help this helps.

Any thing I need to know about reassembly other than making sure the position is exact. Will the nut be able to press the arm back on the shaft or should this not be an issue. The only reason I posted the question was because my Haynes manual showed this being done in a vice.
