Hey Keefus. That's pretty elaborate procedure that you are going to need checklists and charts and illustrations for, as well as the right equipment. You are going to need a Chilton's for that and I'm betting there's one sitting on the shelf of your local library just waiting to be checked out. It will give the correct procedures and sequences to get you distributor installed and timed. The check engine light may or may not be related and you should get a diagnostic readout to make sure you know what's going in there as well. One other source of info my be your local Chevy service manager or mechanic. Find out when the roach coach comes around and then be there and buy someone a sandwich. Then put the install procedure you have in front of him and he'll probably spill his guts. Good luck!
