What do u call the speedometer sensor on the transmission, on a 1991 s-10 2.8 v6.

My speedometer is starting to work and not work, how do I troubleshoot this prob , what are the names of external parts
of the trans, (for the speedometer)????On the left side all the way to the back of the tranny??

VSS-vehicle speed sensor...mounted on trans, reads a reluctor wheel inside trans.
