Partially ATF fluid change for 2000 Honda CR-V

Asked by GuruVHYSS Sep 26, 2018 at 12:53 PM about the 2000 Honda CR-V LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

On regularly scheduled ATF change (partial, not complete refill/replacement of
ATF) in my Honda CR-V, Year 2000 model:
1.  Where to find Honda ATF-Z1 (Mineral Base fluid) for my old car ?
2.  What other brand names do made ATF fluid same as ATF-Z1 in the market,
presently, there are ATF fluids claimed to be specially used for Japanese cars,
such as Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and etc..., but they seem suggesting to be
used as a replacement option for Honda ATF-DW1 (Synthetic Base) for late
year models ?
3. Can I partially refill new ATF-DW1 into my existing ATF-Z1 in Honda CR-V, a
mix between mineral and synthetic bases ?  The mechanic told me that, the
mixed fluid is not integrated well and look bad, I either replace 100% of ATF-
DW1 or use ATF-Z1, if not, I have to keep as it, don’t do regularly scheduled
ATF change.
Please help ... Thanks

You can order the fluid from Amazon for far less than anywhere I’ve found. This is the process I did when i replaced transmission fluid. It has a drain plug just like your oil change. To replace all the fluid you must drain and fill 3 separate times driving your vehicle for between 25-50 miles each time you drain and fill. You will need roughly 8 quarts. ATF refill qty is 2.7 Qts each time. You need to replace the aluminum crush washer on the drain plug also. It’s available on Amazon also. How to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=A5IheNqofaw

You have use the DW1 fluid because the original fluid is discontinued / replaced by DW1. It’s perfectly fine to mix them but I would change it 3 times within roughly 500 miles to insure you get all fluid replaced but it still won’t hurt anything if you do only drain and fill once

The type of fluid depends on the age of the vehicle. I have a gen 1 Odyssey. It can use dextron II, III or IV. I've been using that for 15 years without incident. However, If your vehicle calls for Z-1, you must use DW1, which replaces it( as mentioned above). I suspect Honda had problems with transmission failures using Z-1 and redesigned their fluid. From everything I've heard, don't mess with the transmission by using some other fluid. Honda engineers have engineered the fluid for their transmissions. Yes, drain and fill is easy. Instead of doing multiple drain and fills after 60 K miles or so, I just do a drain and fill every oil change for a few oil changes then do one after every 3 or 4 oil changes or about 15,000 miles. Each drain and fill only replaces about 1/2 of the fluid. If you choose to do multiple d and fs it's not necessary to drive a long distance. What is necessary is to drive in all gears, including reverse. This means you need to get up to at least 50 mph to be sure you're in high gear. It only takes a few minutes of driving to fully circulate the new fluid and mix it with the old. I've read a calculation that 3 drain and fills will replace about 83% of the fluid. Happy motoring!
