Blowing Coolant

Asked by FordNut Nov 08, 2014 at 11:05 AM about the 2005 Ford F-350 Super Duty XL Crew Cab LB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi guys, here's the deal. My son has a 2005 F-350 Ford Powerstroke 6.0 started blowing coolant out tailpipe. He took it to mechanic and told him it is EGR valve stuck open. I don't know much about Powerstrokes, and if that is even possible for the EGR,to cause that.  Any and all suggestions highly appreciated, thanks

Do you have compression bubbles in your cooling system? Remove radiator cap with engine running. If it has bubbles coming out you definitely have compression in it. Could be head gasket, could be cracked head. Either way, not good.

Thanks to both of you.. I will call him and have him try that test EmmaK, he lives in Arizona and I'm here in LA.

No bubbles. Opened cold, allowed to warm up for over 20 minutes to make sure, and normal coolant flow. Put cap back on and hoses did not get pressurized too much. So far so good...one of the O-rings on the EGR valve was gone..just not there! Fingers crossed.

An egr valve will get gummed up with carbon and and take power away.have same truck same problem.you need a egr cooler delete kit .did that on mine.and head gaskets.common on.2005 6 lt very expensive.if it under 160 thou its free class action law suit was won against navistar engines .good luck.
