Should I have warnings before catalytic converter failure?

Asked by ran Apr 16, 2007 at 12:58 PM about the 2004 Ford F-150 Lariat Ext. Cab

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have been told by Ford dealer that my catalytic converters have failed. Should I have had an indication or warning before they completely go out?

There are warnings other than a check engine light, such as a rattling under the vehicle. If the ceramic in the converter totally breaks loose and turns, it can cause the O2 sensors to trip, and a very rough idle. I have seen converters get red hot and in one case catch the carpet in a ford LTD on fire
