transmission problems

first the over drive light on the shifter went out then i was stopped at a stop light and it wanted to die. when i started to go again the trans would not shift out of first gear. any advise ?

You said it was trying to die at a stop....was it "chugging"? If so it could be the brake on off switch, but it could also be the throttle position sensor, vehicle speed sensor, differential speed sensor, coolant temperature sensor or even the manifold absolute pressure sensor

It has a good chunk of them, those are just things in general that can effect overdrive and shifting
