WTB high milege 2003 Ford F-150 Problems?

Asked by dbltap Jan 18, 2009 at 10:35 AM about the 2003 Ford F-150 XLT Crew Cab 4WD SB

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I'm looking at a high mileage F-150, 238000 miles.  5.4 V-8 and Auto Transmission. The truck has had only one owner that I do not have contact with.
The Car Fax report is clean and so is the truck. But, what problems do I look for regarding the engine and tranny? What sounds are acceptable and what ones are not?
Thanks

my expedition has 293000+ miles on it and has no abnormal sounds in engine or transmission. So nothing that is out of the ordinary would be acceptable for me!

Personally I wouldn't trust it any farther than I could throw it. I've seen more fords from that generation of fords in the shop than anything else.

its true that they do show up in the shop often but honestly most fords of the era did... fortunately they are mostly just minor fixes and computer issues... I wouldnt hesitate if the price is right just know that your getting into a used truck... the power plants and trannys are pretty solid... as for sounds that are good or bad youl know if they are bad .... (big knocking grinding screaching...)
