Hard start

Asked by Travis Jul 18, 2016 at 02:53 PM about the 2002 Ford F-150 XL SuperCab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2002 F150 4.2 V6 with 149k mi.
Starts good in the morning. After warmed up, i
have to crank for a few seconds, turn off and crank
for about 3 seconds before it hesitantly starts.
Also, there's a fuel smell i think due to slight
flooding from cranking, not sure. However, if
starting within 5-6 minutes of shutoff, it starts fine.
Anything longer though, up to even 4 or 5 hours of
sitting it has trouble. Replaced starter, fuel pump,
filter, pressure regulator, 3 suspect injectors, plugs,
wires, coil pack, crank position sensor, throttle
sensor, cleaned MAF and throttle body, and ran
premium with sea foam of course. Thinking theft
system? Running out if ideas. Thanks for any
advice.

Pressure could be bleeding down in the fuel rail due to a very small leak or possibly a dripping fuel injector. That may be the fuel you are smelling. Does the engine oil smell like fuel?

Not that i can tell. I wondered about a dripping injector. I changed three along the way because i thought they were maybe bad. Would a leaky injector still work like a good injector while running? It just runs so good otherwise. I appreciate the input. Should i just test the pressure over varying time periods?

Do you depress the accelerator while trying to start the vehicle? If so, do not.
