"a crackling sound came from the passenger side under the dash" - Sounds like a short circuit to ground or some other electrical problem. That's the first place I would look to see what happened.

Here is what I can add. My 2003 has a v6. Getting into the car one cold morning I turned the key and absolutely nothing. Battery was dead. Since I was pulled into a single car driveway between a residence and fence there was no way for the neighbor to jump the batter. The neighbor and I decided to push the thing out of the driveway so a jump would be possible. The thing would not come out of park. I later learned that when the battery is totally dead, you cannot shift the vehicle out of park as foot pressure on the brake must be applied to enable a switch to actuate to all for the shift. Your battery is definitely shot. Maybe the only problem.
